Upgrade to a New FreeBSD Virtual Server

Now you can quickly and easily upgrade your current Virtual Server running BSD/OS Unix to a new Virtual Server running FreeBSD.

NOTE: If your Virtual Server was ordered before Nov 23, 1999, you are likely running BSD/OS. To find out which O/S your Virtual Server is running, use the uname command:

% uname

Create a FreeBSD Shadow Account

Virtual Server customers who wish to move to this improved platform will be provided a new "shadow account" for migrating all of their current BSD/OS Virtual Server files. To create a new FreeBSD "shadow account" simply follow the simple steps below. You will not be charged a new setup fee for creating a shadow account, nor will you be charged a monthly fee while the account is still a shadow account. This makes the entire upgrade process pain-free cost-wise. You will have 30 days to move your current account to the new shadow account.

  1. Shadow
Simply contact stormer@stormerhosting.com and inform me that you wish to transfer your BSD/OS server files to a new FreeBSD account. Once this is done, a new server will be setup for you.  You will be responsible for moving all your files to the new server.   Please note, there are some limitations to this process.   If you currently have FrontPage extensions installed on your older BSD/OS server, you will need to install new FrontPage server extensions on the new server.   While the new FreeBSD server is in "shadow" status, the "content" that you put onto the new Server will NOT be viewable until you take the server out of "shadow status".   FrontPage will be the heart ache!  You will end up having to ftp an index.html page to each of the directories..  then publish all of your client domains at once as soon as the server is taken out of "shadow status".    In many respects, it is worth getting a "new" server, paying the setup fees and monthly payment for a month so you can take your time transferring your clients.  The choice is yours.   Also keep in mind that if you have many perl scripts installed, the full Unix paths will change, including sendmail.
  2. Transfer
After the new shadow account is created you will be given 30 days to move all of the files you want to keep from your current BSD/OS Virtual Server to your new FreeBSD Virtual Server shadow account. After you have uploaded your files to your new shadow account, make sure that your new site is working correctly prior to moving on to the next step. Remember that it is fully your responsibility to ensure that you have moved all necessary files to the new shadow account before requesting that the shadow account go live.

  3. Go Live
You are able to go live with your shadow account anytime within the 30 day period after the shadow account is created. Requests to go live will generally be processed by our Customer Service Staff within one day. Once you "go live", all requests for domain name(s) pointing to your existing Virtual Server account will then be routed to your new FreeBSD shadow account. To do this, we will modify your DNS information to point to the shadow account's IP address in our nameservers, if you are using our nameserver (ns1.secure.net and ns2.secure.net) or a Virtual Nameserver provided by us. This process will be done automatically by our Customer Service Staff. If you are doing your own DNS, it is solely your responsibility to update your nameservers with the correct IP address for the domain name(s) you host.

At the same time we move DNS over to the new FreeBSD Virtual Server we will also be terminating the old BSD/OS Virtual Server. It is essential that you migrate all necessary files prior to requesting that the server go live since the old account will no longer be accessible nor retrievable after you request that we go live with the new shadow account.   Taking this into account, if you have FrontPage you should create offline backups of all your client files.  As soon as you "Go Live", you can then start publishing your offline content to your new FreeBSD server.

To go live with an existing shadow account simply contact stormer@stormerhosting.com. They will need to know the IP address (192.41.XX.XXX) of the shadow account you wish to go live.
